What to Know
Piano Meets Tap
Ragtime, stride and jazz accompanied the September Tap-A-Long, part of Piano in Bryant Park. Toes Tiranoff hosted, with Yuka Aikawa as pianist and musical director.
Aikawa studied classical piano at Kunitachi College of Music in Tokyo. She went on to earn a master's degree in jazz performance at Queens College in New York. Her work spans piano performance and dance accompaniment, and she is a resident Tap-A-Long pianist.
The Tap Dancers
Seven dancers were scheduled to take part: Megan Haungs, Yuka Kameda, Nyles Lattimore and Michela Marino Lerman, along with Beverly Ann Moore, Adriana Ogle and Toru Sakuragi.
Room to Join In
Visitors were welcome to bring their tap shoes and join the jam. The afternoon paired live piano with tap dancing and offered a chance to participate, with no admission charge.
Remembering Cobi Narita
The performance was dedicated to Cobi Narita, a New York jazz producer. She produced concerts and created opportunities for musicians through the Universal Jazz Coalition and Jazz Center of New York.
For musician Bobby Sanabria, that support was personal. In a 2023 remembrance for WBGO, a jazz radio station, he credited Narita with helping him begin his New York career.
