We will start our tour on Madison Square. 23rd Street and Madison Avenue is a bustling intersection located in the heart of Manhattan, New York City. This vibrant crossroads is emblematic of the city's fast-paced energy and urban vitality. Lined with a mix of sleek glass-fronted office buildings and boutique shops, the area captures the essence of New York's blend of commerce, culture, and diversity.
We'll keep walking on Broadway until we reach 34th Street, where we'll turn east and head towards Moynihan Train Hall. Moynihan Train Hall is an expansion of Pennsylvania Station, the main intercity and commuter rail station in New York City. Moynihan Train Hall is located in the former main post office building, which was built in 1912 and has a Beaux-Arts style with a grand facade and a vaulted ceiling. Moynihan Train Hall opened in 2020 and features a 225,000-square-foot rail hub with modern amenities and services. The train hall has a glass skylight that spans across the entire ceiling and allows natural light to enter the space. The train hall also has art installations by prominent artists such as Kehinde Wiley, Stan Douglas, and Elmgreen & Dragset. Moynihan Train Hall connects to Penn Station through an underground passageway that also leads to several subway lines. Penn Station is one of the busiest transportation hubs in North America, serving more than 600,000 passengers daily. Penn Station was originally built in 1910 and had a majestic design with marble columns, arches, and domes. However, Penn Station was demolished in 1963 to make way for Madison Square Garden and an office complex. The current Penn Station is located underground and has a functional but unremarkable design. From Moynihan Train Hall or Penn Station, we can take a short walk to another landmark on our tour: the Empire State Building.
The Empire State Building is one of the most recognizable skyscrapers in the world and a symbol of New York City. The building was completed in 1931 and was the tallest building in the world until 1970. The building has a Art Deco style with a limestone facade and a spire that changes colors at night. The Empire State Building has 102 floors and two observation decks that offer spectacular views of the city and beyond. The 86th floor observation deck is the most popular and has an open-air terrace that wraps around the building. The 102nd floor observation deck is enclosed and has floor-to-ceiling windows that provide a panoramic view. The Empire State Building also has a museum that showcases the history and culture of the building and New York City.
We'll end our tour at one of the most exciting and vibrant places in New York City: Times Square. Times Square is a major commercial intersection, tourist destination, entertainment hub, and neighborhood in Midtown Manhattan. Times Square is formed by the junction of Broadway, Seventh Avenue, and 42nd Street, and is brightly lit by numerous digital billboards and advertisements. Times Square is also the center of the theater district, which is home to many Broadway theaters that host popular musicals and plays. [36] Times Square is also a major center of the entertainment industry, with many studios, theaters, and venues that host shows, events, and performances. Times Square is one of the most visited tourist attractions in the world, drawing more than 50 million visitors annually. Times Square is also the site of the annual New Year's Eve ball drop, which began on December 31, 1907, and continues to attract over a million visitors to Times Square every year. The ball drop is a tradition that involves lowering a giant crystal ball from a flagpole atop One Times Square at 11:59 p.m., and counting down the final seconds of the year until midnight. The ball drop is accompanied by fireworks, confetti, music, and cheers from the crowd. [40] Times Square has many attractions and activities for visitors to enjoy, such as shopping, dining, museums, arcades, wax figures, street performers, and more. Times Square is also close to many other landmarks and attractions in Midtown Manhattan, such as Rockefeller Center, Bryant Park, Grand Central Terminal, Radio City Music Hall, and more.
