What to Know
Two Days on Meadow Lake
The 2024 festival ran August 3 and 4 at Flushing Meadows Corona Park. Admission was free, and racing shared the weekend with traditional music and dance, martial arts, arts and crafts, and food vendors.
More Than 180 Teams
Over 180 teams and roughly 2,000 athletes took part. The race program included open competition, youth invitationals, charity races, nonprofit races, and corporate challenges, bringing experienced crews and community teams onto the same course.
Every Boat Has a Rhythm
A crew can include up to 20 people: paddlers, a drummer, and a steersperson. The drummer establishes a shared cadence while the steersperson holds the line, turning synchronized movement into speed.
Tradition Meets Modern Equipment
The event used both custom-made teak boats and modern fiberglass boats built to international standards. Painted dragon heads and tails gave each hull its ceremonial identity before crews entered the racecourse.
The Eyes Come to Life
Before racing, heads and tails are attached and boats receive a blessing. The eye-dotting ceremony paints the dragon's eyes red, symbolically waking the boat before competition begins.
A New York Festival Since 1990
The Hong Kong Economic and Trade Office launched the New York festival in 1990 on the Hudson River near Battery Park City. It later became an independent nonprofit and established its long-running home at Meadow Lake.
Culture Beyond the Finish Line
The program connects contemporary racing with the Qu Yuan legend, rice-dumpling traditions, Chinese performance, and Queens community life. The Hong Kong government's 2024 festival record confirms the dates and Meadow Lake setting.
