What to Know
Five Years Off-Broadway
The revival began previews September 17, 2019, and opened October 17 at the Westside Theatre. It paused during the pandemic, resumed performances September 21, 2021, and reached its fifth anniversary in 2024.
A Noon Times Square Performance
The September 19 event placed a live performance at the north end of Broadway Plaza between 46th and 47th Streets. The cast performed numbers including the prologue and "Skid Row (Downtown)" before the public unveiling.
Current and Former Casts Met
Sarah Hyland, Andrew Barth Feldman, James Carpinello, and the company appeared with alumni including Jonathan Groff, Conrad Ricamora, and Drew Gehling. Composer Alan Menken also joined the celebration.
Audrey II Grew to Eight Feet
The outdoor statue stood eight feet tall and seven feet wide and weighed approximately 500 pounds. SpotCo developed it from Nicholas Mahon's designs and Martin P. Robinson's original puppet design, while Ideko fabricated the installation.
Four Weeks on the Plaza
Audrey II remained in Times Square through October 17, 2024. The durable outdoor version turned the musical's man-eating plant into a temporary public landmark beyond the Westside Theatre.
New Leads Were Announced
The event announced Sherie Rene Scott and Nicholas Christopher as the next Audrey and Seymour. Hyland and Feldman completed their runs September 29 before the new leads began October 22.
A Musical With a Long Memory
Alan Menken and Howard Ashman's musical first ran Off-Broadway from 1982 to 1987. Playbill's anniversary report documents the 2024 performance, guests, casting news, and production timeline.
