What to Know
Elephants Above Washington Street
Toy elephants fitted with small parachutes were released from rooftops. The narrow street, framed by former industrial buildings and the Manhattan Bridge, made the descent visible to the crowd below.
A Fundraiser for Local Schools
Elephant purchases supported PS 307 Elementary School and the Dock Street School, both Title I schools serving the neighborhood. The fundraising purpose connects the event's spectacle to the families who use the surrounding streets each day.
A Block Party Around the Drop
The 2024 program extended into the DUMBO Archway with crafts, children's activities, food, and a beer garden. The ticketed release areas and free activities offered different ways to participate.
A Neighborhood Tradition
The first drop took place in 2017, and an artist designs new parachutes for each edition. DUMBO stands for Down Under the Manhattan Bridge Overpass; its warehouses recall a nineteenth-century industrial waterfront served by the Jay Street Connecting Railroad.
Each Edition Has Its Own Rules
Dates, viewing areas, and donation levels change. The official DUMBO Drop page is the source for future schedules and fundraiser details.
