Please join me for a visit of the Climate Change installation by Miya Ando. The installation, titled Flower Atlas, uses 72 cloth banners to draw attention to the shift in traditional Japanese seasons created by climate change 1. The banners hang in New York City’s Brookfield Place mall and depict an ancient Japanese calendar through unique floral motifs.
Each of the large-scale banners represents one of the 72 seasons in the Japanese Kō calendar, which was initially developed in the 7th century. In contrast to the standard Western calendar, it responds more closely to the natural environment by breaking the 365-day year into seasons of around five days each. The banners each depict a flower that blooms just one day a year during these “micro seasons”.
After visiting the installation, we can make our way through the Oculus at Ground Zero. The Oculus is a transportation hub and shopping center designed by architect Santiago Calatrava. It serves as a connection between the PATH train and the New York City Subway, as well as a destination for shopping and dining. The structure’s unique design, with its ribbed wings and soaring interior space, makes it a must-see attraction in Lower Manhattan.
The Port Authority is hosting an interactive wildlife sculpture installation at the World Trade Center Campus. The installation, titled “A Wild Life for Wildlife in New York”, will be on display between the Oculus and 3 World Trade Center beginning on May 24, 2023, for 12 months.
