Hello, and welcome to a New York City Sights & Sounds Virtual Tour! I'm Vladdy, your friendly guide, and I'm here to show you some of the most amazing sights and attractions in the Big Apple. We'll start our tour at Union Square, a historic intersection and neighborhood in Manhattan, where Broadway and the former Bowery Road – now Fourth Avenue – came together in the early 19th century. Its name denotes that "here was the union of the two principal thoroughfares of the island".
Union Square has a year-round greenmarket, where you can sample goods from local farmers. It also has several playgrounds, a lively holiday market, and benches where you can watch a slice of New York go by. You can also admire the art and sculpture in the square, such as the equestrian statue of George Washington, the first public sculpture in New York City; the Metronome, a large digital clock that displays various patterns of numbers; and the Gandhi statue, a tribute to the Indian leader and advocate of nonviolence.
From Union Square, we'll head north along Broadway, one of the most famous streets in the world. Broadway is known for its theaters, musicals, and entertainment venues, but it also has a lot of history and architecture to offer. Along the way, we'll pass by Madison Square, a public park that hosts a year-round greenmarket, art installations, and various events.
Madison Square is named after James Madison, fourth President of the United States. There is a statue of him inside the park, created in 1890 by Alexander Doyle. ³ You can also see the Flatiron Building, one of the first skyscrapers in New York City, with its distinctive triangular shape; and the MetLife Tower, once the tallest building in the world until 1913. Next, we'll reach Herald Square, another major commercial intersection in Midtown Manhattan, formed by the intersection of Broadway, Sixth Avenue, and 34th Street. Named for the now-defunct New York Herald, a newspaper formerly headquartered there, it also gives its name to the surrounding area. The most notable attraction is Macy's Herald Square, the flagship department store for Macy's, the largest Macy's store in the United States.
Macy's is famous for its annual Thanksgiving Day Parade, which ends at Herald Square with the arrival of Santa Claus. You can also see the James Gordon Bennett Monument, a huge mechanical clock with two bronze figures that strike a bell on the hour; and Greeley Square, a triangular park named after Horace Greeley, who was the publisher of the New York Tribune, the Herald's rival newspaper. As we continue along Broadway, we'll arrive at Times Square, one of the most iconic and visited places in New York City.
Times Square is a major commercial intersection, tourist destination, entertainment hub, and neighborhood in Midtown Manhattan. It is formed by the junction of Broadway, Seventh Avenue, and 42nd Street. Times Square is brightly lit by numerous digital billboards and advertisements as well as businesses offering 24/7 service. One of the world's busiest pedestrian areas, it is also the hub of the Broadway Theater District and a major center of the world's entertainment industry. Times Square is one of the world's most visited tourist attractions, drawing an estimated 50 million visitors annually. It is also the site of the annual New Year's Eve ball drop, which began on December 31, 1907, and continues to attract over a million visitors to Times Square every year, in addition to a worldwide audience of one billion or more on various digital media platforms.
Finally, we'll reach Rockefeller Center, a large complex consisting of 19 commercial buildings covering 22 acres between 48th Street and 51st Street in Midtown Manhattan. Rockefeller Center is a national historic landmark and one of New York's most inspiring locations. It was built by John D. Rockefeller Jr. in the 1930s as a "city within a city" that would house offices, entertainment venues, and public spaces. Rockefeller Center is home to Top of the Rock Observation Deck, NBC Studios, Radio City Music Hall, and much more. You can shop, dine, and explore at one of New York's most famous cultural landmarks. You can also see the Rockefeller Center Christmas Tree, a world-renowned symbol of the holidays that attracts millions of visitors every year.
